$1.15 million Unbridled’s Song yearling wins debut at Oak Tree

Alcindor, a 3-year-old colt by Unbridled’s Song, broke his maiden at first asking at Hollywood/Oak Tree on Oct. 23. The dark bay/brown colt sold for $1.15 million at the 2008 Keeneland September yearling sale, where he was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency.

Trained by Bob Baffert for Thoroughbred Legends Racing Stable, Alcindor completed the six furlongs over the Cushion Track in a lively 1:09.45, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 92.

Bred in Kentucky by Aaron and Marie Jones, Alcindor is out of the mare Zing and is a full brother to Half Ours, who won the Three Chimneys Juvenile S. at two and the Grade 2 Richter Scale Sprint Championship H. at four.

“He was a really big horse and looked like he was going to be something special,” said Baffert the morning after the race, explaining both why the colt was named for basketball star Lew Alcindor (who after college changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar).

“He showed a lot of grit to win,” said Baffert. “I thought he would be on the lead, but I liked the way he sat behind horses and waited.”
